History brought Evanston residents Sarah Hagye and Dan Schoeneberg together. The two met through an Eastern Illinois University Historical Administration alumni program in 2005. When they began dating a few years later, Dan, described as a “Midwestern mutt” by Sarah, was in Indianapolis. Sarah, originally from Glenview, was in Chicago. They were together for five years long distance before Dan moved to Chicago to be with Sarah. In March 2013, after two years in the same city, Dan asked Sarah to marry him. “We had spent all day at the art museum and apparently he had the ring with him waiting for the right time to propose,” Sarah said. “He couldn’t pull the trigger and ended up asking me at home while I was doing dishes after dinner.” It perfectly complimented their laid-back personalities. Sarah and Dan wed on Feb. 1 at the Century Memorial Chapel at Naper Settlement in Naperville. The couple immediately connected to the historic church. Their reception took place at the Bartlett Hills Golf Club, an intimate setting that made it easy to interact with all of the guests. Sarah incorporated the white of winter into the reception and accented it with deep chocolate, antique gold and natural evergreen branches and pinecones. “There is such beauty in the stark contrast of winter,” Sarah said. “It was important to me to capture that natural element.” Interested in adding a unique twist to their guestbook, Sarah and Dan bought vintage paper on which guests could leave their own notes or words of advice. Guests put these notes in provided envelopes and dated them for any time in the future. “It’s fun because we get to open up envelopes from our family and friends with cute notes — some even go five years into the future,” Sarah said. Sarah is a program manager at Wagner Farm in Glenview, and Dan is a freelance museum consultant.
